1. The surprise that Eddie brought back was an old alto saxophone. Even though is was old, Bud thought it still sounded great. Eddie and some of the other group members put in some of their own money to buy it a pawnshop.
2. Buddy realized the room he was staying in, in Herman E. Calloway's house was that it was his mom's old room. This made him feel quite close to his mom, but at the same time he felt really sad.
3. The thing that Bud discovered in the glove compartment of Herman E. Calloway's Packard were rocks with names of places and numbers on them. He had these because he remembered that Angela his daughter, Bud's mom, wanted those. Because of this wherever he went to play for people, he collected rocks from the different cities.
4. Mr. Calloway didn't ever visit Bud and Bud's mom because after Bud's mom ran away from home, Mr. Calloway never knew where she went. He didn't know about Bud and wasn't able to contact them or see how they were.
5. Bud's mom ran away from home because she was too stressed with all the pressure Mr. Calloway was putting on her. He was harsh on everyone because he knew it was hard for a negro woman back in the old days. He had to be harsh on her so she knew what it would be like. Because of this she taught Bud how to be kind and he has gone quite far after she died.
6. I think that Mr. Calloway was harsh on Bud at the start because he didn't want people he never knew to budge in on him. He thought that it would be too much responsibility taking care of another person. He also was harsh on Bud because Bud is black. Mr. Calloway was going to have to teach Bud what he taught to Bud's mom. After Mr. Calloway figured out that Bud was his grandson I think they had a closer relationship because he knew that Bud was one of his own now and that he could have another chance to teach a kid about the real world.
